In this 3-day workshop students will create three progressively more difficult projects designed to teach the fundamentals of wire-weaving and related techniques.
First, we will make the Wire Woven Ribbon Bracelet. The over-over weave and its variations learned while creating this bracelet, are the basis for many other wire-weaving designs, including those with very complex, layered patterns. In addition to the weaving techniques, students will also learn how to loop and shape frame wires as well as how to use a torch to ball up the ends of the wires.
Next, students will work on the Woven with Flair Necklace. Building on the skills learned in the previous project, we will add additional techniques, including using templates to shape large-gauge wires, bending and manipulating woven ribbons and learning how to add and drop frame wires.
In the third project, the Cabochon Pendant, students will combine all the techniques from the bracelet and the necklace designs and also add several new ones. Students will be introduced to the over-under wave, as well as some more advanced skills needed for setting a cabochon into a wire-woven bezel. For this last project, students will follow precise instructions to create the bezel and the pendant’s bail then use the skills learned in class and their own creativity to finish the pendant in their own unique way.
